Montana County Ag Project
Description: Montana’s number 1 industry is agriculture and we rank #2 in the US with lands in farms and ranches-which totals nearly 61 million acres! To discover more about Montana’s agriculture industry each of you will research and create a “county ag map” for 3 different counties. To make it fair, I have decided that I will create a map for Meagher County. This is a chance for you to learn about the different agriculture in Montana as well as express your creative side!
                                            
Requirements for project:
□□□Name of county
□□□Outline of county map
□□□Pictures/symbols of main agricultural products: Either drawn or printed out and must have color!
□□□ Key/Legend: Describes what each picture/symbol represents
□□□ Statistics: How much of each crop is grown/produced?  What are the numbers of livestock raised? How does your county rank in comparison to other counties in Montana? Amount of money the county makes off of agricultural products. Any other stats/interesting facts you find that relate to agriculture in your county.
□□□ Sources: Websites, articles, newspaper, journals, books, encyclopedia, etc. Type these sources on a separate piece of paper to be handed in with your final project. You must have at least 3 sources!

3.) Why do you think pumpkin-flavored foods and drinks have become so popular in recent years?
How can this be used to the advantage of the industry of agriculture?
4.) Tradition says that pumpkins can be used to cure snake bites. What other fruits or vegetables have similar "old wives tales" associated with them?

Livestock Project
Directions: Each of you will choose a livestock animal to create a poster to share with the class.  Any pictures on the poster need to be printed out in color, or drawn with color.  All words on the poster must be typed out or written neatly with permanent marker.  Anything that is being glued on the poster needs to have backing paper (construction paper).  You will be sharing these with the class so make sure the words and pictures are big enough for everyone to see!!
You will need to include the following information on your poster:
Title: you can simply put the name of your livestock animal, or come up with something creative!
A picture of the animal you chose (if you have a specific breed make sure you have the correct picture)
What is the purpose of your animal? (think of food, fiber, work, and look on the internet for other uses too!) I would like at least 5 different uses of your animal, and if you put more, it will be extra credit
A picture that goes with each purpose. For example: if the purpose of your animal is meat, you could put a picture of a steak.  You will have a total of 5 pictures.
Do we raise this animal in Montana?
If we do raise this animal in Montana, where in the state is it raised? Include a picture of the county/town/region.                                                                                                         
Where did your animal originate?
A picture of where your animal originated
An interesting fact that you found while researching about your livestock animal!

Ideal Greenhouse

We have discussed the major points of locating, designing, and operating a greenhouse structure.  You now need to make a diagram/ drawing/ or model of your ideal greenhouse.

The following considerations must be incorporated into the drawing and then discussed in a paper that explains the design.
1.       conditioners, shade cloths etc. …
Circulation system:  Keep the air moving and evenly coole

1.      Location:  where and why is it located there.   Remember to think about latitude and longitude, topography, climate, light intensity etc.
2.      Zoning:   In relation to you local position where are you? (residential, commercial, industrial, urban vs. rural etc.)
3.      Water system: What drain and water supply do you have?  Where is it located, how is it provided to plants?
4.      Greenhouse type: Quonset, Gothic Arch, Connected, Even Span, etc.
5.      Greenhouse covering: Polyethelyne, lexan, FRP, Glass ……
6.      Heat system: Fuel used, heater type, location, thermostats, fog heat, steam, hot water, etc.   
7.      Business type: Research, retail, wholesale, personal use ….
8.      Cooling system: Vents, evaporative cooling pads, fans, air d/heated.
9.      Lights:  Do you need any?   What type, where located?
10.  Internal setup: Table locations, use of space etc.
11.  Access:  Roads, Parking, Utilities etc.

Has anything important been forgotten???

Explain the situation in which you choose to operate your greenhouse and then design it for that situation.  Make sure to consider all 12 factors listed above.  Think about how each will affect the others.   Design for me the most ideal greenhouse for your situation.

1: Model/Drawing/Diagram:            36 points
2 pts each       factor graded upon its detail and practicality of fitting with situation and demonstration of knowledge of unit material.
12 points         for quality of the work.

2:  Written Explanation:                   48 points
36 points         Each factor is explained.  In the explanation each factor is discussed in detail (why, how, in what way it affects other factors, cost, etc.)
           

12 points         Writing ability. Sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, etc.
