Greenhouse Structure Activity:

Ideal Greenhouse

We have discussed the major points of locating, designing, and operating a greenhouse structure.  You now need to make a diagram/ drawing/ or model of your ideal greenhouse.

The following considerations must be incorporated into the drawing and then discussed in a paper that explains the design.

1.     Location:  where and why is it located there.   Remember to think about latitude and longitude, topography, climate, light intensity etc.

2.     Zoning:   In relation to you local position where are you? (residential, commercial, industrial, urban vs. rural etc.)

3.     Water system: What drain and water supply do you have?  Where is it located, how is it provided to plants?

4.     Greenhouse type: Quonset, Gothic Arch, Connected, Even Span, etc.

5.     Greenhouse covering: Polyethelyne, lexan, FRP, Glass ……

6.     Heat system: Fuel used, heater type, location, thermostats, fog heat, steam, hot water, etc.

7.     Business type: Research, retail, wholesale, personal use ….

8.     Cooling system: Vents, evaporative cooling pads, fans, air conditioners, shade cloths etc. …

9.     Circulation system:  Keep the air moving and evenly cooled/heated.

10.  Lights:  Do you need any?   What type, where located?

11.  Internal setup: Table locations, use of space etc.

12.  Access:  Roads, Parking, Utilities etc.

Has anything important been forgotten???

Explain the situation in which you choose to operate your greenhouse and then design it for that situation.  Make sure to consider all 12 factors listed above.  Think about how each will affect the others.   Design for me the most ideal greenhouse for your situation.

1st Period: Floriculture (9:04-10:34am)

Monday: Course Syllabus
History of Floral Design (chapter 2) students will choose a time era and create an educational poster to share with the class.

History of Floral Design

Directions: You will choose 2 time eras (pg 28-43 in the Principles of Floral Design textbook).  Your first task is to read your sections and become “experts” on your time era.  Next, you will gather information and pictures to create a poster.  Put your information for both time era’s on the same poster.   You will present these posters to the class so make sure the pictures and print are large enough to read from the back of the classroom.

***You will be graded on not only having all of the required information but on the neatness and quality of your poster.  Take your time and make it look nice! ***

Your poster should have the following information for EACH time era:

1.)   A description about the design schemes used in that era.  Describe what the floral arrangements looked like, the type of flowers they used, popular colors, types of vases or pots they used, etc.

2.)   If your book lists events that arrangements were used at, list them

3.)   If your book lists why certain flowers were used, explain the meaning/history/symbolism

4.)   Find 2 pictures of arrangements from EACH time era

5.)   Make sure there is a title with the time period (example: ROME 28 BC-325 CE)

List your 2 time era’s here and any notes you take while reading your section:
