Greenhouse Structure Activity: 

Ideal Greenhouse

 

We have discussed the major points of locating, designing, and operating a greenhouse structure.  You now need to make a diagram/ drawing/ or model of your ideal greenhouse.

 

The following considerations must be incorporated into the drawing and then discussed in a paper that explains the design.

 

1.     Location:  where and why is it located there.   Remember to think about latitude and longitude, topography, climate, light intensity etc.

2.     Zoning:   In relation to you local position where are you? (residential, commercial, industrial, urban vs. rural etc.)

3.     Water system: What drain and water supply do you have?  Where is it located, how is it provided to plants?

4.     Greenhouse type: Quonset, Gothic Arch, Connected, Even Span, etc.

5.     Greenhouse covering: Polyethelyne, lexan, FRP, Glass ……

6.     Heat system: Fuel used, heater type, location, thermostats, fog heat, steam, hot water, etc.   

7.     Business type: Research, retail, wholesale, personal use ….

8.     Cooling system: Vents, evaporative cooling pads, fans, air conditioners, shade cloths etc. …

9.     Circulation system:  Keep the air moving and evenly cooled/heated.

10.  Lights:  Do you need any?   What type, where located?

11.  Internal setup: Table locations, use of space etc.

12.  Access:  Roads, Parking, Utilities etc.

 

Has anything important been forgotten???

 

Explain the situation in which you choose to operate your greenhouse and then design it for that situation.  Make sure to consider all 12 factors listed above.  Think about how each will affect the others.   Design for me the most ideal greenhouse for your situation.

 

GRADING

           

1: Model/Drawing/Diagram:           36 points

2 pts each       factor graded upon its detail and practicality of fitting with situation and demonstration of knowledge of unit material.

12 points         for quality of the work.

 

2:  Written Explanation:                  48 points

36 points        Each factor is explained.  In the explanation each factor is discussed in detail (why, how, in what way it affects other factors, cost, etc.)

           

12 points        Writing ability. Sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, etc.

Directions: Your poster needs to have LARGE print (so it can be read from the back of the classroom).  Use pieces of construction paper to back your text and pictures.  Your poster needs to have the following information:

**Title

**5 different breeds (pictures and names of each breed)

**Where did the breeds originate? (just type the place of origin for each breed)

**What are the traits of each breed? (describe key characteristics and what the breed looks like, key colors or color patterns)

**What is each breed used for? What is the purpose of the breed? List 2 purposes for each breed.  Include a total of 5 pictures. Example: a picture of steak if it is used for meat.

**Any other interesting facts you’ve found while researching your livestock animal

 8th grade: Wildlife Project

Directions: Choose a species from Wildlife Textbook, conduct research and create a presentation.  You can present your information in a PowerPoint, Prezi, Poster, or written paper.

Requirements for Project:

a.      Title

c.      Feeding habits (what do they eat?) 

d.     Where in the world are they located?

e.      Height and weight (for either a fully grown male or female) 

f.      Why do they matter? What is their purpose in the environment? 

g.     Is this species on the endangered list? If so, why are they endangered?

h.     Why did you choose this animal? 

i.       Is your animal a predator or a prey?

j.       One interesting fact you found while researching your wildlife animal
